Victorian and Edwardian fireplaces

We have just restored this beautiful cast iron Victorian combination fireplace. The quality of the castings illustrates just how exceptionally skilled the Victorian craftsmen were. More detailed and far sharper than most reproduction onesThis particular fireplace dates from 1891.

Set with a hearth the fireplace can be used for solid fuel, with a gas fire insert or just left as a decorative item.

This and several others can be viewed in our showroom.

2019 Clean Air Strategy - a breath of fresh air

14/1/2019

The 2019 Clean Air Strategy to tackle pollution from homes was launched by the Government today. The view of Ash & Embers is this is very welcome news.
Here are some of the key elements:
- To ensure only the cleanest burning stoves are available from 2022 -
Ash & Ember took the decision some years ago to only display & sell the cleanest burning stoves so every stove in our showroom will either be DEFRA exempt or EcoDesign Ready meeting 2022 emission standards.
- To prohibit the sale of the most polluting fuels -
There is no reason not to use kiln dried or two year seasoned wood as each year prices have fallen. Again this is all Ash & Embers sell and promote for use in our stoves. Damp wood does not burn cleanly and even if used in the best stove still produces harmful emissions.
- Make changes to existing smoke control legislation to make it easier to enforce -
Anything than can be done to stop wood being burnt on open fires is good news, particularly in metropolitan areas. It has been illegal to burn wood in smoke control areas since the 1960's but councils have failed to crack down on this practice.
Perhaps we would not be where we are now if this had been enforced?
The strategy also states that there will be a consumer awareness campaign. Better late than never!
If you fancy a read the bit relating to stoves and fires at home are on pages 57-62

The Parkray Aspect 6 is just one in a range of clean burning contemporary stoves from this well known British company. Rated at 4.9kWs but with a very large window this stove is exceptional.
Four other models from the range are also on display in the Ash & Embers showroom in Abridge.
Come and see.

Latest and very special addition to the showroom is the all new Charnwood Island 1.

An iconic stove redefined with exceptional clean burn Blu technology. This is a complete redesign of the classic twin-door stove with cleaner lines, beautiful symmetry and a larger picture window for a spectacular view of the fire.

This stove boasts an efficiency of over 85% and an extremely low smoke particle level of 9mg/m3 (the Ecodesign limit is 40mg/m3). With ground breaking new burn technology the All New ISLAND I not only meets Defra exemption limits (allowing wood to be burnt cleanly in smoke control areas) but vastly exceeds the new 2022 Ecodesign standards.
Shown in Charnwood Gunmetal colour
