Fireplaces come in all shapes and sizes, and so do the houses where we fit them. Therefore it would be very useful if you had some basic information to hand when you come and see us.
The main measurement we need is the width of the chimney breast (if you have one). Some houses have a chimney breast projecting into the room, some have a flat wall with it outside. Either way if you could measure the overall width.
There are lots of other measurements we will need, but for now you can begin the process.
Chimneys
If you are planning to have a gas or solid fuel fire fitted you will probably need a chimney. Take a look and see if you do have one. Does it end with a chimney pot? Is there anything else on top? Is it a metal, brick or clay chimney?
Again any information about the current set-up is useful for us. However, don’t worry if this is all too complicated – we offer a free site survey to check all this out for you. There is no charge for this service as it is information we need to know.
Don’t worry if you do not have a chimney. There are many ways a gas fire can be fitted – powerflue, balanced flue and even flueless where no chimney is required. For solid fuel a chimney is always required, and can either use an existing flue, or can be built using a stainless steel system. Chances are you won’t even need planning permission.
No natural gas and you don’t want solid fuel? Many gas fires are available with LPG (bottled gas) versions. This is a good simple way of operating a stove for extra heat in conservatories or workshops.
